Set up your printer

Pick the receipt and kitchen printers, paper size and auto-print, and run a test print.

Updated on October 9, 2026

With QZ Tray installed and authorized, what is left is telling La Comanda which printer to use for what. It is done in the Printer card under Settings → Point of sale (/admin/settings/pos), and repeated once per computer.

Connect to QZ Tray

At the top of the card is the status: Connected or Disconnected. If it says Disconnected, check that QZ Tray is open and press Connect. The connection drops every time you reload the page; if you already have a printer configured, it reconnects on its own.

If it cannot connect, the card tells you exactly why (the browser blocked access, QZ Tray is not responding, La Comanda is blocked in QZ Tray) and what to do. The Copy diagnostics for support button copies the technical information to send to support. Every notice is explained in Printing troubleshooting.

With QZ Tray connected, the wizard button changes to Re-run setup, in case you need to install the certificate on that computer again.

Pick paper and printers

  1. Select the Paper size. 58mm prints 32 characters per line; 80mm prints 48. Pick the one that matches your roll or tickets come out cut off or with overlapping text.
  2. Choose the Receipt printer. The list comes from the printers your operating system already has installed; there is no IP address, port, brand or model to enter. If you see No printers found, install the driver and print a test page from the system; the moment it shows up there, it shows up here, with the refresh button next to Receipt printer. Which printers and connections work is in Compatible printers.
  3. Choose the Kitchen printer. It is optional. If you leave it on Same as receipt, kitchen tickets come out of the receipt printer. If you have a printer in the kitchen, pick it here.
  4. Decide what prints on its own.
    • Auto-print receipts: prints the receipt as soon as the payment completes.
    • Auto-print kitchen tickets: sends the ticket to the kitchen as soon as the order is placed.
  5. Press Test print. A ticket should come out with the text aligned and the paper cut at the end. If you see Test print sent but nothing comes out, check that the selected printer is the right one and is turned on.

Two printers are not required. A single one can print receipts and kitchen tickets; separate them when the kitchen is far from the register.

What prints and from where

  • Receipts: with Print receipt after a payment, or on their own if you turned on auto-print. They carry the Receipt Footer you set in the Receipts card on the same screen.
  • Kitchen tickets: with Print ticket on the kitchen display, or on their own when the order is sent.
  • Pre-bills: with Print pre-bill in the point of sale, so the customer can review before paying.

Auto-print comes out of the computer where the action happens: where the order is sent or the payment is completed. If you take the order from a tablet, print the kitchen ticket from the kitchen display on the computer with Print ticket, or charge from that computer so the receipt prints on its own.

The configuration lives on each computer

The paper size and the printers you picked are saved in that machine's browser, not in your account. If you have two registers, you configure each one separately, and clearing browser data means picking them again. That is deliberate: each register has its own printer in front of it.

This also explains why a tablet shows No printer configured: thermal printing only exists on computers.

When something does not print

  • It says Disconnected: QZ Tray is not open. Open it and press Connect.
  • A security prompt appears every time: the certificate is missing. Run the Setup wizard following Install QZ Tray.
  • The ticket comes out cut off or with overlapping text: it is the paper size. Change it and repeat the test.
  • It prints strange symbols or blank pages: almost always a printer that is not ESC/POS or a generic driver. Install the manufacturer's driver for your exact model.
  • QZ Tray is open but will not connect, even after reinstalling: La Comanda got blocked in QZ Tray. Follow the unblock in Printing troubleshooting.

Every case, with what each notice on the card means and what to send to support, is in Printing troubleshooting.
