Close a shift
Count the cash, compare expected with counted, explain any discrepancy and close the register.
Updated on October 8, 2026
Closing the shift is the register close: the system calculates how much cash should be in the drawer, you count what is there, and the difference is recorded with its explanation. Everything sold during the shift is kept in the Shift summary for later review.
Quick reconciliation during the shift
You do not have to wait until closing to verify the drawer. In the shift panel press Count Cash: the Cash Reconciliation opens, shows the Expected Cash Breakdown and lets you enter your count without closing anything. Save Count records it. It is useful mid-service or before a large withdrawal.
Close the shift
- Open the shift panel and press Close Shift. If there are orders still in the kitchen or open tabs, you will see a notice: you can close anyway and they stay pending for the next shift.
- Review the Sales Summary. It shows the starting amount, the shift duration, Cash Sales, Card Sales, MP Terminal Sales if there were any, Tips, Cash Tips and Total Sales, plus the shift's Deposits and Withdrawals.
- Look at the Expected Cash. It is calculated as Opening + Cash Sales + Cash Tips + Deposits - Withdrawals.
- Count the cash. With Count by denomination you enter how many coins and bills of each value there are and the system adds up the Grand Total. With Enter total manually you type the Counted Cash directly.
- Compare. If it matches you will see Balanced. If not, you will see Discrepancy with the amount and whether the Cash drawer is over or the Cash drawer is short.
- Explain the discrepancy. When there is a discrepancy, the Explanation field is required. If the difference is above $10, Large Discrepancy Detected also appears so you verify your count before continuing.
- Press Close Shift. You will see Shift closed successfully and the point of sale asks for a shift again before selling.
A closed shift cannot be reopened or edited: the count and the discrepancy remain as audit evidence. If you made a mistake, document the correction in the next shift with a deposit or a withdrawal and its reason.
Where the report lives
- Reports → Shift summary (
/admin/reports/shift-summary): the full detail of sales, payments and movements for every closed shift. Administrators see it. - Reports → Cash reconciliation (
/admin/reports/reconciliation): expected versus counted cash per session. - Reports → Cash discrepancies (
/admin/reports/discrepancies): the history of overages and shortages with their explanations. - My Shifts (
/admin/my-shifts): each cashier sees the history of their own closed shifts, and under My Tips (/admin/my-tips) the tips that belong to them.
The three cash reports are part of the base plan; they do not require Reportes Pro.
