Open a shift
Open the register at the start of service by choosing a cash register and entering the starting cash.

To sell you need an open shift. The shift ties your sales, tips and cash movements to a cash register and to the person operating it, and it is what later lets you balance the cash when closing.
Before opening
An administrator must have created at least one register in Cash Registers (/admin/cash-registers). If you go into the point of sale and see No registers available, ask them to create one; how to do it is in Cash registers.
Open the shift
- Go into the Point of Sale. From the admin sidebar or directly at
/pos. If you have no open shift, the screen asks for one. - Press Open Shift. The dialog opens with two fields.
- Choose the register under Select Register. Only active registers appear. If someone else already has a shift open on that register, you will see This register already has an open shift by… and will have to pick another.
- Enter the Starting Amount. This is the cash you start the shift with: the change float that is in the drawer. It can be zero if you only take card.
- Confirm with Open Shift. You will see Shift opened successfully and land on the selling screen.
A person can only have one open shift at a time, and each register allows a single open shift. If you already have one, the system tells you: You already have an open shift.
What the shift indicator shows
On a computer, the point-of-sale header has an indicator with a wallet icon, the register name and Opened at with the opening time. Pressing it unfolds the shift panel with these buttons:
- Add Deposit and Withdraw Cash, to record money going into and out of the drawer.
- History, with this shift's deposits and withdrawals.
- Payments, with the payments processed this shift.
- Count Cash, to reconcile without closing the shift.
- Close Shift.
- Display size, to enlarge or compact the whole interface on that device.
On a tablet or phone the same controls are in the menu that opens from the three-line button in the header.
Choose how to view the point of sale
In the same header you can change the POS view:
- Classic: full view for fixed terminals and register operation.
- Server: touch view optimized for taking orders on the floor, with the tabs in the bottom bar.
The choice is saved on that device, so the register can stay in Classic and the floor tablets in Server. How to take orders in each view is in Take an order.
Next step
With the shift open you can start selling. At the end of service, follow Close a shift.
